2022 Saracina Soul of Mendocino Red Wine Blend Mendocino County

Drawn from organically farmed vineyards rooted in Mendocino’s rugged, ancient soils, Saracina’s 2022 Soul of Mendocino Red honors both the land and the people who bring it to life. The estate’s roots run deep into the Mayacamas foothills, where this wine emerges as both homage and evolution: a seamless blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, old-vine Grenache, and Carignan that transforms the region’s rustic soul into something quietly profound and elegantly refined.

At Saracina, craftsmanship begins below ground. The team studies the mineral threads of each parcel, nurturing vines whose roots dive deep through fractured sandstone and clay. That dedication to detail yields fruit of rare vibrancy, marked by sunlight and tension. It’s viticulture as quiet artistry, where science and soul work in concert.

In the glass, the Soul of Mendocino Red captures everything Saracina stands for: vibrancy without excess, texture without weight. Zinfandel lends warmth, Petite Sirah depth, Grenache grace, and Carignan lift, composing a symphony of balance and quiet confidence. It stands as both a reflection of its landscape and a reminder that elegance needs no excess.

2022 Slingshot Cabernet Sauvignon North Coast

In a world where many Cabernets chase power and weight, Slingshot chooses clarity and freshness. It’s a wine built on transparency and precision, crafted from the finest corners of the North Coast and polished just enough to let the fruit shine. With sleek tannins, cool vibrancy, and effortless confidence, it proves that approachability and depth aren’t opposites, but partners in refinement.

That clarity begins in the vineyard. Sourced from select sites across Mendocino and Lake Counties, the 2022 vintage captures the full character of the North Coast’s landscape. Each parcel contributes a distinct voice: structure from Mendocino’s ancient riverbeds, freshness from Lake County’s volcanic ash. Together, they shape a Cabernet that’s expressive, finely textured, and alive with energy.

The 2022 Slingshot feels effortlessly composed. A Cabernet that doesn’t shout its origins; it reveals them gradually, with quiet precision and modern grace. For those who crave the purity of California fruit without the excess, this wine lands exactly where craftsmanship and authenticity meet.

2021 Guthrie Electric Syrah Mendocino County

Guthrie’s 2021 Mendocino County ‘Electric’ Syrah radiates with energy from the dramatic, volcanic slopes of Eagle Point Vineyard. Set high amid Mendocino’s rugged terrain, this site’s red soils instill a distinctive intensity into the grapes, translating directly into a wine that pulses with mineral character and savory depth.

The visionary behind this electric expression is Blair Guthrie, a winemaker whose journey has traversed both hemispheres. Born in New Zealand, Blair absorbed lessons from some of the world’s most revered wine regions before settling into California’s embrace. At Guthrie Wines, he champions an ethos rooted in sustainable farming and minimal intervention, allowing the vineyards to express themselves with authenticity.

Blair’s meticulous craftsmanship finds its ultimate expression in this pure, organically farmed Syrah, vinified with care and respect through whole-cluster fermentation. Ten months in French oak impart a subtle polish without overshadowing the wine’s vibrant character. The resulting Syrah balances beautifully on the palate: texturally rich, elegantly structured, and irresistibly nuanced.

2021 Slingshot Cabernet Sauvignon North Coast

Slingshot was born from a desire to craft premium California wines that deliver purpose without pretense. Since its founding in 2005, Slingshot has focused on the North Coast AVA—a mosaic of world-class vineyard sites spanning Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, and Lake Counties. Each bottle reflects the region’s coastal influence, diverse soils, and vibrant microclimates, all while honoring the founder’s belief that great wine should be inspiring and accessible.

Guiding this vision is winemaker Blair Guthrie, whose global experience and restrained approach define Slingshot’s signature style. A native of New Zealand, Blair honed his craft across hemispheres before planting roots in California. Today, he champions sustainable viticulture and low-intervention winemaking, allowing the vineyards to speak clearly. The result is wines of transparency—unforced, expressive, and deeply rooted in their origins.

The 2021 Slingshot exemplifies this vision. Sourced from the Testa and Johnson Vineyards—two acclaimed sites in Mendocino and Lake Counties—it showcases the North Coast’s signature depth and vibrancy. For those seeking a Cabernet that speaks with clarity, character, and coastal charm, this is a bottle you’ll return to time and again.

“The 2021 Slingshot North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon opens with an elegant floral notes of violets, complemented with vibrant blueberry, blackberry, and black currant aromas. On the palate, the wine has a savory core of spice, balsamic reduction, dark chocolate, and a subtle hint of fresh mint. This wine has a refined structure, with dusty tannins and a distinctive minerality reminiscent of petrichor, and though slightly lighter-bodied than a typical California Cabernet, this wine gives finesse, impressive concentration, and depth, carrying through to a long, polished finish.”

2022 Portalupi Charbono L. Venturi Vineyard Mendocino County

Portalupi’s L. Venturi Vineyard Charbono impressed us deeply, easily surpassing the Cabernets we recently tasted. This is a wine of undeniable allure, weaving layers of profound depth that command your full attention with each sip. With only 80 acres of Charbono gracing California’s vineyards, Portalupi’s masterful expression stands as a siren call, beckoning wine lovers to rediscover a varietal that whispers of untapped potential.

Charbono’s journey is one of resilience, tracing back to the slopes of France’s Savoie region, where it’s known as Douce Noir, and flourishing in the rustic landscapes of Northern Italy. This enigmatic grape yields brooding wines, inky depths, sumptuous textures, and a structure as enduring as stone. In the US, vintners like Turley, Heitz Cellar, and Robert Foley have also unveiled Charbono’s hidden charms, and Portalupi’s version stands tall among them.

Drawn from 90+-year-old vines that stretch their roots deep into the pinole gravelly loam of Mendocino’s L. Venturi Vineyard—this Charbono is a testament to the magic of California terroir. Its robust, yet elegantly structured profile enchants, proving that Charbono is a revelation waiting to unfold in your glass.

CHARDONNAY 2019

2019 Baxter Chardonnay Oppenlander Vineyard
Philip Baxter gained inspiration for winemaking as a young boy working alongside his father, an influential figure and a supporter of his endeavors. After attending UC Davis, Phil took an internship in Burgundy. In France, he contributed to wine production from more than 30 vineyards ranging from village level to Grand Cru, developing French-winemaking techniques he would later bring to California.

Baxter wines are exclusively handmade, benefiting from Philip’s 17 years of experience and gentle, traditional French techniques that celebrate the varietal and the terroir. The grapes came from a small block on the Oppenlander vineyard. They were harvested by hand, fermented in neutral French oak, and aged on the lees for 12 months, adding body to the fresh, pure fruit flavors for a domestic Chablisienne-style Chardonnay that’ll rock your world when you try it.

2018 Black Kite Pinot Noir Kite's Rest Anderson Valley
Black Kite Cellars was born out of a love for Burgundian Style Pinot Noirs after Rebecca and Tom Birdsall spent a vacation biking through the region, tasting the distinct nuances from one vineyard to the next. Rebecca and Tom were specific on the style of Pinot Noir they preferred, tasting through Anderson Valley, Sonoma Coast, Carneros, Russian River Valley, Santa, Lucia Highlands, Willamette Valley, and Burgundy to discover what they were looking for in a winemaker.

Jeff Gaffner joined the team in 2005 after earning fame from helping make the 1996 Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cépages, which was Wine Spectator’s #1 Wine of the Year. The Kite’s Rest Pinot Noir comes from the winery’s estate vineyard of the same name planted with Dijon 114, 115, and Pommard, giving the wine balance between the elegant aromatics of the Dijon clones and the richness and body of the Pommard clone. If you enjoy boutique, hand-crafted Pinot Noir, you really should try it.

2018 Portalupi Petite Sirah L Venturi Vineyard
Portalupi Winery specializes in site-specific wines made from exotic varieties. Winemaker Tim Portalupi has 40 years of experience, and he uses his skillset to give unorthodox varietals a voice that transcends the status quo. He made his 94 Point Petite Sirah from the L Venturi Vineyard in a deeply enchanting style that’s rich in supple fruits, intriguing complexity, with soft, velvety tannins. At this price, it’s an otherworldly value that’ll further the following of this remarkable grape and bring attention to this incredible vineyard.

Tim sourced his Petite Sirah from the organically farmed L Venturi Vineyard in Mendocino, which he chose for its unique climate that creates a balance between acidity and tannins. The half-century-old vines are dry-farmed in well-drained Pinole gravelly loam soils and produce fruit with an intense sense of place.

Tim ages his Petite Sirah in American oak barrels, which he believes better settles the inherent acidity of the Petite Sirah grape. The 2018 vintage underwent a complete 100% Malolactic fermentation which results in rich, supple fruit and layers of complexity.

2015 SYRAH
RAM’S HORN VINEYARD

Some of the greatest values in red wines can be found in American Syrah.  It’s one of the classic varietals of the world, and was made famous in the Northern Rhone valley of France with the world-class wines from Cote Rotie and Hermitage.  Many would argue that in the New World, Americans are a little behind the curve in the appreciation of Syrah and it’s because of this, that you can occasionally find a ridiculous deal on a fantastic wine.  There’s no better example than Cornerstone’s 2015 single vineyard Syrah which is a stunning bottle of wine at it’s $85 retail price… Make sure to join our Insider’s Club mailing list (it’s free) to unlock special offers and see one of the best values that I’ve come across in my career.

This remarkable expression of California Syrah was authored by talented winemaking duo Kari Auringer and Charles Thomas. Kari worked under Celia Welch at Cornerstone as well as contributing to the fame of some of the Napa Valley’s most luminous names including Scarecrow, Keever, Kelly Fleming and Corra. Charles has more than 30 years winemaking experience including crafting Robert Mondavi’s Reserve Cabernets, the first twelve vintages of OPUS ONE, and his work at Cardinale, Lokoya, Verité and Rudd.  This beauty also defeated EVERY wine in the Syrah & Shiraz over $41/btl category at the SF Chronicle Competition, and was named “Best of Class.” You may want to grab all you can…

Winery Notes:French by heritage, California in spirit. These head trained Syrah grapes were lovingly grown high on a steep hillside at 1,800 feet, overlooking the little town of Hopland in Mendocino. Small berries on petite clusters struggle on this dry farmed ranch, which gives this wine a dark and concentrated color. The aromas are a complex combination of ripe black berries, boysenberry and earthy sage. You’ll also likely find typical Syrah notes of smoked bacon, tar and black pepper. Lush and fleshy on the palate, this wine is ripe from long sun-drenched days. More new world in style than old world, but there is plenty of backbone that Syrah is known for. The finish lingers with a melody of mocha, licorice and a hint of allspice wrapped up in silky integrated tannins.
