There are a lot of reasons why Chardonnay is one of the most widely planted varieties in the world, and one of the most popular among consumers.  It’s one of the richest of the white wine varieties, yet can also have amazing balance.  Silverpoint’s new 2016 Chardonnay from the Petaluma Gap perfectly highlights these qualities ….and it’s one of the best Chardonnays that I’ve tasted this year.  It was authored by Don Van Staaveren who was responsible for authoring the Chateau St. Jean wines and made history when his 1996 Cinq Cepages was recognized as the #1 wine on the Spectator Top 100 list, and the first Sonoma wine to garner the #1 spot. What makes the village of Meursault and the wines produced there so special? You might argue it’s the location in the heart of the Côte de Beaune between Volnay  and Puligny-Montrachet.  Others would opine that Meursault is one of the oldest and most celebrated places in the world producing Chardonnay. For me, it’s the hallmark characteristics of Meursault that I find profound… Classic Meursault should have deep complexity, citrus fruits and fresh floral notes coupled with rich, nutty flavors of toasted almonds and roasted hazelnut, subtle stone and liquid mineral qualities.  Chavy-Chouet’s single vineyard Meursault Les Narvaux has everything that I look for in a great bottle of Meursault and at under $100/btl you’ll think you are dreaming the moment you taste it.
 
Even the most devout Burgundy aficionado probably hasn’t heard of Chavy-Chouet’s Meursault Les Narvaux and with a mere 50 cases imported into the US, I’m not at all surprised.  The wine comes from a hillside parcel, perched right above Premier Cru vineyards Poruzots and Genévrières, where the soft, chalky, clay soils are shallow and gravelly, with bare rocks and marl that produce exceptional fruit.  With the price of Meursault often reaching hundreds of dollars per bottle, this is the perfect introduction to superior quality white Burgundy at a relative value.

One of the greatest contributing factors to some American blends being so delicious upon release is the ability for American winemakers to be as creative as they want when making a wine.  They have the unrestricted artistic freedom to blend any varietals together. A perfect example is Y. Rousseau’s Son of a Butcher which utilizes the intense color and firm structure of the Tannat grape, and is made even more compelling with additions of Bordeaux Varietals Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. I’m certain that if you could have seen the grins that came over the faces of our tasting panel when we tasted this wine, you would’ve already ordered a case…
 
Why tannat? Aside from the vast and unique contributions that Tannat (deemed the “healthy grape” due to high levels of antioxidants) adds to the blend, like robust character, intense fruit, spice and structure, winemaker Yannik Rousseau is from South West of France where the grape is widely grown.  Tannat on it’s own can often be gripping and powerful, but when blended with Bordeaux varietals, the power of the Tannat grape can be harnessed into something truly special.  This wine has that magic and it’s clear from the moment the wine splashes into your glass and the deep, fragrant perfume of ripe blackberry pie, roasted coffee, white pepper and dried flowers lets you know you’re going to like it…

I love seeing nice guys in the wine industry achieve success with their brand, and even more than watching their journey to success… I love tasting their wines.  When we first introduced Sailor’s Grave a few years ago, we knew we were onto something special. The wine went on to sell hundreds of cases over the next few vintages with continual re-orders and countless glowing comments. Truth-be-told the 2016 vintage is at an entirely new level and for a winemaker, this has got to be what success tastes like.  We taste a lot of wines, and last week was a particularly large tasting with over 100 wines. Faust can be described as the next generation in classic Napa Valley Cabernet that’s a go-to on restaurant wine lists, in a similar way that old-school producers Heitz and Stags Leap have been for many years.  Created in Quintessa’s state-of-the-art winery in Rutherford, Faust’s 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon has superior focus and unleashes a bounty of exquisite aromas infused with opulent black fruits, melted chocolate, graphite and crushed rock.  Created from the winery’s estate vineyards in Coombsville and Rutherford, combined with additions of Atlas Peak, Mount Veeder and Howell Mountain resulting in diverse flavors that continually unfurl new components with aeration.  At under $50 per bottle this is absolutely one of Napa Valleys best values in Cabernet Sauvignon.  
 
Pre-fermentation, the grapes are hand-sorted twice with full-attention to every detail.  Optimizing technology, Quintessa uses a gravity-flow method where are grapes are gently crushed on the winery roof before making their way to the fermentation room below using the force of gravity.  This provides a gentler, more grape friendly approach to winemaking and the results simply need to be tasted to be appreciated.

A common thread linking many of the top wines that we’ve discovered is that most of them sold out before many of you got to try them.  Those are usually the wines that are the easiest to describe and I believe our excitement over them is contagious. Orrin-Sage Pinot Noir defines that statement and based on the flurry of gushing comments and attempted re-orders, many of you felt just as strongly about the wine as we did.  This remarkable expression of Pinot Noir was was expertly made by Justin Harmon who gained valuable experience as an intern under Russell Bevan.  It’s absolutely one of the best Pinots in the shop under fifty per bottle and the 2016 shouldn’t be missed.  
 
Arising from the rugged Sonoma Mountain AVA, a unique area which gains some of the cooling influence from the Petaluma Gap and produces brilliant Pinot Noir fruit.  Bevan, Siduri and Flowers are just a few of the wineries that have crafted Pinots from this unique area.  The 2016 has stunning balance and opens up to vivid red fruits, dried rose, wild blueberries and tea leaf.  You’ll feel like you stole something after you taste it.
