BERNARD MAGREZ

BECKSTOFFER DR. CRANE
2011 CABERNET SAUVIGNON

2011 Bernard Magrez Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Cabernet SauvignonThe synchronicity between esteemed winemaker Benoit Touquette and Beckstoffer’s iconic Dr. Crane Vineyard is powerful and absolutely indisputable… Benoit is responsible for multiple 100 points from this very vineyard as the winemaker at Realm.  And as one of Napa Valley’s most celebrated heritage vineyards, Beckstoffer Dr. Crane produced single vineyard Cabernets from Paul Hobbs, Realm and Myriad to list a few.  Nearly all Cabernet from this hallowed ground ranges from $175 to over $500/btl…
Saturating, intense, generous, lovely… these would all be perfect descriptors for the 2011 Bernard Magrez.  There’s also something magical that often happens right around five years in the bottle.  This wine has a fully developed, intense and hedonistic bouquet that can only come from bottle age.  It has focused, powerful intensity and scrumptious texture, that has to be experienced to be believed.   I strongly recommend adding some of this gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon to your cellar.

AMAPOLA CREEK

2014 Amapola Creek Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon2014 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
ESTATE, SONOMA VALLEY

If rich, deep and extracted Cabernet Sauvignon doesn’t pique your interest,  add to it a 93-95 Point Score from Robert Parker and a legendary winemaker like Dick Arrowood, this wine should be edging towards the top of the list. Stunningly long and complex, this wine simply pops on your palate with an explosion of lingering flavors.  The grapes were sourced from the Amapola Creek Estate Vineyard which borders the iconic Monte Rosso Vineyard, made famous by Ridge in the 1960’s…  It was expertly authored by renowned winemaker Dick Arrowood who rocketed to fame crafting some of Sonoma’s most notable wines, including Chateau St. Jean from 1974 through 1990.

Created from a collection of various vineyard blocks, diversity is what truly sets this wine apart. After resting for 24 months in French oak barrels, this wine is made in an approachable style that will immediately bring a smile to your face, but also promises to age gracefully for the next 10-15 years.  This 95 point Cabernet will take you to that happy place, so you’ll want to order this wine by the case…

2014 Red Mare Chardonnay Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Sonoma County
With everything you would want in a world-class California Chardonnay, Red Mare’s 2014 emerges from the famed Dutton Ranch Vineyard in the heart of the Russian River Valley. Fruit from Dutton Ranch has gone to top producers like Kistler, Patz & Hall, & DuMOL…  This one was expertly guided from grape to bottle by Anne Vawter, who’s experience includes assistant winemaker at Paradigm Winery in Oakville for four years, under the leadership of legendary winemaker Heidi Barrett.

A luminous interpretation of Dutton Ranch fruit, the 2014 washes over your palate with classic Granny Smith apple, spiced pear, juicy yellow melon and subtle lemon bar.  Big and full across the palate and crafted in a plump, round style, if you’re searching for a top-level California Chardonnay without the high price tag that usually comes with one, I would saddle up and secure a case of Red Mare before this one rides off into the sunset.

2014 Montagu Bacigalupi Pinot Noir
Nothing beats drinking a stunningly beautiful Pinot Noir from one of California’s most Iconic Vineyards. Montagu’s 8 barrel production of their Baciaglupi Vineyard Pinot erupts from the glass with an exotic perfume of crushed blackberries, dried violets, Asian plum and baking spices.  This world-class vineyard made history at the 1976 Paris tasting when Château Montelena triumphed over all of the French wines in its category.  40 percent of the fruit was sourced from Bacigalupi.
Created in a deep and saturating style, the 2014 is beautifully textured, and loaded with class.  Utilizing three revered Pinot clones, 777, 667 and Pommard, and each complimenting the strengths of the others… the wine is then finished in high quality French oak barrels.  If you love big, California style Pinots like Marcassin, Belle Glos and Kosta Browne, one taste will bring you home.

SOBERANES VINEYARD

The Santa Lucia Highlands AVA isn’t just producing world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay…  Some of the greatest Syrah in California also comes from the SLH, and the Soberanes Vineyard’s very name rings with excellence… Daniel’s two barrel production of Syrah opens up to a sybaritic harmony of sweet black cherries, smoked meats, charcuterie, pulverized blackberries and dried violets.
This profound Syrah was composed by accomplished winemaker Dan Fitzgerald, who got his start working at Williams-Selyem… With attention to every minute detail, this wine was gently created using a gravity flow method, then kept for 18 months in oak barrels.  As the wine unfolds in the glass, rich and inviting flavors envelope your palate in pure elegance, and become increasingly compelling as the wine opens up.

Laird 2013 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
When it comes to traditionally styled Napa Valley Cabernet, one of my favorite examples is from Laird Family Winery.  As one of the largest land owners in Napa Valley, Laird has access to some terrific fruit sources.  The 2013 Napa Cab is built from almost equal parts Mast Ranch and Flat Rock vineyards.  The winery produces single vineyard Cabernets from both of these sites which retail for $80 to $90 per bottle…  It’s a brand that I love, and in fact we featured their 2012 vintage as one of our top 5 wines of the year in 2017.  At $53/btl the 2013 is simply stunning and a wine that shouldn’t be missed.

Laird has always attracted terrific winemakers.  The wines are currently made by Brian Mox, who spent several vintages at Lewis Cellars.  In 2013, Laird’s Consulting Winemaker was Paul Hobbs, one of the top winemakers in the world, having crafted such notables as Opus One, DuMOL, and Peter Michael to name a few.  This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Yountville spends an impressive 22 months in oak and generously delivers hedonistic delights with velvety tannins and great length.  The most common reaction to tasting this one is “Why haven’t I heard of these guys before?”  Consider yourself in-the-know!

SMALL VINES

2014 PINOT NOIR
SONOMA COAST

Small Vines 2014 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

We’ve been conditioned to believe that bigger is better… but sometimes smaller is pretty darn good. Small Vines defines what a true Artisan producer is, and crafts wines of brilliant clarity, stunning depth and perfect balance.  They’re not just small in production, but their organically farmed vineyards yield just 1 to 2 pounds of fruit per vine naturally, due to the petite vines and tight spacing.  Then again, big can be good too, like the flavors which are broad and expansive, and of course, the high score.  At $55/btl this wine competes with the best California Pinots on the market.
Emerging from four sensational vineyard sites including TBH, Fassler, Baranoff and MK, the winery also produces single vineyard Pinots which retail for around $70-$80/btl.  Once harvested, the berries pass through roughly a dozen rigorous hand-evaluations, selecting only the very best grapes.  If you’re searching for a stunningly complex, classic Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, you’ll want a case of this beauty.

From one of Margaret River’s leading Chardonnay producers, the 2015 Prelude doesn’t disappoint. It’s a nutty, smokey, toasty, melony beauty. SILVER GHOST CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2015 NAPA VALLEY
In the wine business, the saying that nice guys finish last doesn’t hold an ounce of truth.  Anybody that’s met Weston Eidson, founder and winemaker at Silver Ghost will likely tell you that he’s absolutely one of the nicest guys in the wine industry, and I concur.  Silver Ghost always finishes first, and it’s also the first bottle finished when opened next to comparably priced wines.  When you’re as nice as Weston you can access to some seriously high quality fruit at a price low enough to produce a killer Napa Valley Cabernet at under forty per bottle. The 2015 comes from vineyards in Rutherford, Saint Helena and Yountville, where the diversity in each iconic site adds it’s own unique character and complexity to the final blend, which is stunningly good.
The 2015 is becoming known for its superior quality, and this Silver Ghost is brimming with crushed black fruits, chocolate covered blueberries, dried violets and espresso roast.  It’s kept for 22 months in French oak barrels, and if  you’ve tasted Weston’s earlier vintages of Silver Ghost, then you already know… If you haven’t, I strongly recommend grabbing some before it vaporizes.
