How great can a wine really be? Anybody that’s tasted VISTA and JOSEPH JEWELL knows first-hand the quality of wines that we’ve been able to find at an incredible price.  The new 2014 ENOS Cabernet is in the same category.  The vintage brought a fuller, richer and more structured wine, which is exactly what this wine needed to become something people are going to talk about for a very long time.  When you taste it for the first time you’ll be shocked by the level of quality, which is amplified in all the right places… Totem Ridge Vineyard is located on the Southern edge of the Knight’s Valley, which is an appellation shared with icons like Peter Michael and Anakota and at $60/btl this Cabernet would likely make you very happy.  From Cherry Picked Wines it’s simply one of the greatest values in the shop.

When I tasted BV’s flagship Georges de Latour Cabernet last Fall, I knew huge scores weren’t far behind… The 2015 has such incredible intensity, matched equally with concentration, balance and length, that it will rock-the-world for just about anybody that tastes it.  The wine has Napa Valley history embedded deep into its DNA, and is a timeless classic that embodies every quality that makes Rutherford so wondrous.  Under the guidance of one of the world’s most iconic winemakers, Andre Tchelistcheff, BV built on a reputation of excellence and achievements, and now, nearly 80 vintages later, Georges de Latour is still turning heads. Just look at the group of 96-98 point scores.
 
Enchanting, profound and deeply hedonistic all come to mind when tasting the 2015.  This vintage was made in the winery’s new state-of-the-art facility and it perfectly combines time-honored traditions with modern technologies.  Birthed from the iconic BV Ranches Numbers 1 and 2, originally planted by Georges de Latour in the early 1900’s…  Now that the reviews are out, I wouldn’t hesitate long to secure your case.

Did you know that Chile’s Maipo Valley has a Mediterranean Climate, similar to Napa Valley? Wine regions with a Mediterranean climate are characterized by their long growing seasons of moderate to warm temperatures and they’re perfectly suited for ripening Bordeaux varietals.  Cabernet Sauvignon from Maipo Valley even shares some of the similar flavor characteristics to Napa Valley Cabernet with prominent black current and black cherry fruit.  One glaring difference between the two is the price of land and labor is significantly lower, and because of that, winemakers are able to devote any necessary resources to create high quality wines at exceptionally low prices.  A perfect example is the 2014 PRIMUS Cabernet, which is ridiculously great at under twenty bucks.   
 
With no expense spared in the winemaking, the grapes are double hand sorted before making their way into stainless steel fermenters.  The 2014 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged in French oak barrels for a full year before bottling.  On the palate the wine is firmly concentrated and loaded with classic black currants, dark cherry, mint, and sage.  I highly recommend stocking up…

How many wine releases can you think of that are so Grand that the population of the entire town swells astronomically, and the energy and excitement generated can be felt for miles?  I can only think of one… Silver Oak was canonized as one of the original Cult Cabernet Sauvignons in the New World, in part by their singular approach of using American oak barrels and additional bottle age that combine to project distinctive dark berries, dried herbs, and subtle dill notes. This sets Silver Oak apart as one of the most recognizable names and unique tastes in premium level Cabernet Sauvignon.  With a proven track record that spans more than 4 decades of producing wines that are incredibly age-worthy, yet enjoyable upon release, Silver Oak has carved out a category with their distinctive style, and it’s resonated deeply within their fan base.

Some of my favorite winemakers have a signature style that’s detectable across multiple brands that they make.  For my palate, Thomas Brown’s Cabernets often combine a velvety mouthfeel with well-integrated oak and soft tannins that make them immediately enjoyable upon release and a gem behold.  Revana’s 2016 Terroir Selection Cabernet is a perfect example and even though it’s a massive Cabernet, the flavors unwind in supple layers and uncover remarkable complexity that’s complimented by perfectly integrated toasty oak.  Brown is absolutely at the top of his game and is one of the dominating forces in Cabernet Sauvignon…  He made history as the first American winemaker to receive a perfect 100 Point score from the Wine Spectator, and he’s also the winemaker at Revana, Maybach, Gemstone and Outpost to name a few.
 
Arising from carefully selected vineyard sites in St Helena, Oak Knoll and Calistoga, the 2016 is packed with concentrated blackberry, supple cherries, graphite and a touch of sweet vanilla. Housed for 14 months in French oak barrels and a full year in the bottle before release, this Cabernet will thrill you from first sip to last.

When it comes to the most Iconic Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel Vineyards in Sonoma County, the Rafanelli Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley is foremost.  Their wines are nearly impossible to acquire and are mailing list and restaurant only… What many people don’t know is that William Knuttel produces two Cabernets from Rafanelli Vineyard, so as you can imagine, we couldn’t wait to try them.  Their 2014 D. Rafanelli Mary’s Block is remarkably stunning, and it’s made in an elegant, long and expansive style that keeps you coming back for more.  At around $40, this makes my list of the best Cabernets in Sonoma County.
 
Proprietor William Knuttel isn’t a stranger to high-quality Sonoma County Cabernet.  He was the Vice President and winemaker at Chalk Hill from 1996 through 2003 and he was also winemaker at Dry Creek Vineyards through 2011.  The Mary’s Block produced minuscule yields of just 1.4 tons per are of intensely flavored, BB sized berries, and the resulting wine spent 19 months in oak.  In this realistic price category, this will compete favorably with the best Cabernets produced in Napa Valley and in fact, it did at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition where it earned a Gold Medal.  You simply need to try it.  8 barrels produced.

Napa Valley’s Iconic Rutherford appellation is one of THE most revered regions for Cabernet Sauvignon, and it’s celebrated for producing wines with palpable character.  Paragons Quintessa, BV and Scarecrow all set a precedence for quality in Rutherford.  I recently checked the average retail price of the more than fifty 2013 vintage Rutherford Cabernets listed in the Wine Spectator and they averaged well over $130/btl…  This is a real barometer to the quality of this appellation, and if you’ve followed my emails for a while, you know that one of my favorite Rutherford producers is Foley Johnson.  Their name is synonymous with epic value, and even at the winery retail price of $75 it’s a terrific find.  At our price, it’s a complete steal…
 
Arising from Rutherford, an area long celebrated for its exceptional terroir and dusty tannins, this exemplary 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon shines with all of the hallmarks that I love most about Rutherford.  It’s brimming with concentrated black fruits, crushed violets, graphite, freshly ground coffee and of course, beautiful Rutherford dust.  After nearly 4 years blossoming inside the bottle, words can hardly describe how great this wine is drinking right now.

The body follows the aroma and is fruit forward with nice tannin balance throughout the palate. The fruit on the palate shines and provides flavors from blackberry to slight hints of light raspberry and as it opens up there is a light hint of sweetness and licorice. With origins in Yountville, Coombsville and Oakville, the 2016 was housed in oak barrels for 22 months.  In the glass the 2016 is incredibly hedonistic, with layers of rich and supple dark berries that are intermixed with black coffee, bay leaf, pipe tobacco and dark chocolate.  The finish is long and expansive and makes it impossible to resist diving in for another sip… another glass and another.
