There seems to be a direct correlation between Aerospace Engineers and many of the skills that it takes to become a world-class winemaker.  Just look at Brian Loring who wrote code for submarine missile launch and torpedo guidance systems and now produces a bevy of highly sought after Pinot Noirs.  Steve Jennings, winemaker at Aveo comes from a similar background as an Aerospace Engineer.  With aerospace engineering there’s extreme attention to detail and exact precision that’s needed.  When you take that same approach to winemaking the results speak for themselves.  Aveo‘s 2013 Atlas Peak Cabernet is riveting, deep and enchanting.  Even at the winery’s $75 retail price this wine will have you flying high with excitement…it kicks in the afterburners, and with the tiny production, don’t wait until it’s wheels up…
 
Given wings from one of Atlas Peak’s most revered vineyards… (If I could tell you which one, I’m certain you’d grab a case.)  Aveo co-ferments Cabernet Sauvignon (85%) with Merlot and Petit Verdot to allow the flavors to vector into a singular, rounded wine.  The wine spends an impressive 26 months in oak, and coming from one of Napa Valley’s greatest vintages, this one deserves a spot in your hanger or cellar.

It’s symbolic to the quality of any wine that get’s requested and praised months or even years after our initial offering…  When this happens, some might call it storied or legendary, but when a value Cabernet Sauvignon makes this list, it simply speaks to the above-average quality of the wine.  Worthy’s Sophia’s Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon is cemented onto that list, and there’s really no surprise since it’s actually the second label for Axios, a top tier producer whose Cabernets range $135-$150 per bottle.  It was authored by legendary winemaker Bob Egelhoff, whose held winemaking positions at such notable wineries as Pahlmeyer, Harlan, Chappellet, Merryvale and David Arthur…
 
I’m delighted but not surprised over how great many of the 2012 Napa Valley Cabernets from quality producers have developed in the bottle.  Worthy’s bouquet grabbed me from the very beginning with compelling and hedonistic notes that I found profoundly pleasing.   On the palate, soft and abundant layers of blackberry liqueur-like fruit, sweet mulberries, tobacco leaf, plum and dark chocolate charm your taste buds.  At under thirty per bottle this is clearly a terrific value in Napa Valley Cabernet.

When a wine has literally every component necessary to be a world-class expression of it’s varietal, it’s difficult to find just one high-point to talk about because there are so many attributes that make it special.  Cornerstone’s 2014 Calistoga Cabernet is that wine.  You could start by mentioning winemaker Kari Auringer who worked under Celia Welch at Cornerstone as well as contributing to the fame of some of the Napa Valley’s most luminous names including Scarecrow, Keever, Kelly Fleming and Corra… to name a few.  Or you could talk about winemaker Charles Thomas who has more than 30 years winemaking experience crafting Robert Mondavi’s Reserve Cabernets, the first twelve vintages of OPUS ONE, or his work at Cardinale, Lokoya, Verité and Rudd.  And then there’s the vineyard…

This sets Silver Oak apart as one of the most recognizable names and unique tastes in premium level Cabernet Sauvignon.  With a proven track record that spans more than 4 decades of producing wines that are incredibly age-worthy, yet enjoyable upon release, Silver Oak has carved out a category with their distinctive style, and it’s resonated deeply within their fan base.  In a stellar vintage like 2014, many of those qualities that make Silver Oak so distinctive become even more enhanced.

What makes this Cabernet outstanding? For starters it’s an incredible value.  Even more special are the unique qualities, characteristics and nuances that can only be found in top-quality mountain Cabernet.  In the same way you choose different clothing each day, there’s something really special about having a distinctive bottle of wine you can select that simply makes you feel great.  Atlas Peak Cabernets have firm structure, infused with rocky mineral elements endemic to Atlas Peak.  At $80/btl this wine still puts a smile on your face…your hair will be bristling if you don’t pull the trigger.
 
The winery’s flagship bottling of the Atlas Peak Estate Cabernet was carved from Randy’s (currently being rebuilt after the ’17 fire) home vineyard which is perched at 1,350 feet elevation and planted in volcanic, rocky soils.  The vineyard architect selected tight spacing to encourage the vines to struggle, which in turn helps to create the incredibly expressive and deeply concentrated flavors.  Housed for 24 months in oak barrels, this 2014 is howlingly good now, with flavors that stalk your taste buds with perfect balance and precision.  Don’t be the lone wolf that misses out on this one…

When comparing Shafer to other Cult wines produced in Napa Valley, the obvious difference is that the majority of Cult wine producers make a single namesake wine under that label.  Shafer’s flagship wine is their Hillside Select Cabernet, but they also produce Chardonnay, Merlot, TD9 and their One Point Five Cabernet Sauvignon and more under the Shafer moniker.  Of course when you catch Shafer in a line-up with other top wines, it’s regularly a favorite…  Their 2015 One Point Five Cabernet has terrific power, energy and focus and at under $100/btl it’s a terrific wine to add to your cellar.   Just don’t wait too long to get yours, because there’s never enough of the One Point Five Cabernet to satisfy demand.
 
The 2015 One Point Five arose from two Stags Leap District Vineyards, one of which borders their iconic Hillside Estate Vineyard… Housed for 20 months in Allier & Tronçais French Oak barrels, the 2015 is built around a core of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon then lifted higher with additions of Merlot and Malbec.  At under $100/btl, don’t let this one pass by.

2013 Cabaud Mon Hommage Cabernet Sauvignon
You might know winemaker Luc Morlet from his work at Newton Cellars, Peter Michael, or from his own label Morlet which is raking in 100 point scores… However, most people haven’t heard of Cabaud, and with their tiny production, there’s no surprise.  The previous vintage caught the eye of Robert Parker who scored the 2012 91-94 Points and now with the 2013 vintage, which Robert Parker said might be the finest vintage he’s experienced over the last 37 years, I wouldn’t wait for the scores to secure the 2013.  Finding new wines made by top winemakers, that are somewhat unheard of, pays off big at times… I would estimate Morlet’s Cabs to range from $165 to around $300/btl.  At $130 Cabaud is a killer deal…I cannot put into words how incredible this wine is. 
 
Combining fruit from Glass Mountain in St Helena with Beckstoffer’s iconic Missouri Hopper Vineyard in Oakville, you can taste the magic of these two sites, each enhancing the best qualities of the other and melding together perfectly.  After resting for nearly 20 months in barrel and for another 3 years in the bottle, this 2013 is mind-bogglingly great!  It reminded me of when I first tasted Humanitas Signum and the recent Keever Inspirado, yet ramped up a notch. This is absolutely one of the best bottles in the shop under $150/btl right now…
