JONES FAMILY 2013 Jones Family The Sisters Cabernet Sauvignon

2013 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
THE SISTERS

Almost as common as the name Jones, is the number of times Thomas Brown comes up in my emails.  With nearly two dozen perfect 100 Point wines, Thomas Brown is a dominating force in Cabernet Sauvignon and he’s truly at the top of his game. He made history as the first American winemaker to receive a perfect 100 Point score from the Wine Spectator, and he’s also the winemaker at Schrader, Revana, Maybach, Gemstone and Outpost to name a few.  It’s also not uncommon for Brown’s wines to trade for several hundred dollars per bottle and at under $100, the Jones Family The Sisters Cabernet got my attention…

Packed with supple, concentrated red cherry, deep black raspberry, pomegranate, graphite and a touch of sweet vanilla oak, this absolutely ready to drink Cabernet will thrill you from first sip to last. The vineyard is managed by Jim Barbour, one of the absolute top viticulturists, who’s list of clients include icons like  Hundred Acre, Grace Family and Barbour to list a few…  At under $100/btl this pedigreed Cab deserves a spot in your cellar and on your table…
JONES FAMILY
2013 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
THE SISTERS

Winery Notes: “The supple mouth feel and red-fruit core of the 2013 The Sisters makes it incredibly approachable early.  The color of this wine is a translucent deep garnet and aromas of rose oil, lavender, and mint emanate from the glass.  On the palate the wine is very round and fully reminiscent of a soft flower petal in feel and shape.  Notes of dark cherry, river stone, and jasmine are finely layered and framed by light tannin profile that provides just the right amount of structure.  This wine should be showing well for the next 5-7 years.”

From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate:Dark cherries, plums, menthol, licorice and flowers all come together in the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Jake’s Creek Vineyard. There is plenty of intensity in the glass as this full-bodied, opulent wine shows off its considerable personality. Sweet floral and spiced notes add lift on the finish. Readers will have to be patient with the 2010 Jake’s Creek, but it is striking, even today. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030.” 94 Points

SOBERANES VINEYARD

The Santa Lucia Highlands AVA isn’t just producing world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay…  Some of the greatest Syrah in California also comes from the SLH, and the Soberanes Vineyard’s very name rings with excellence… Daniel’s two barrel production of Syrah opens up to a sybaritic harmony of sweet black cherries, smoked meats, charcuterie, pulverized blackberries and dried violets.
This profound Syrah was composed by accomplished winemaker Dan Fitzgerald, who got his start working at Williams-Selyem… With attention to every minute detail, this wine was gently created using a gravity flow method, then kept for 18 months in oak barrels.  As the wine unfolds in the glass, rich and inviting flavors envelope your palate in pure elegance, and become increasingly compelling as the wine opens up.

2013 NAPA VALLEY

Laird 2013 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
When it comes to traditionally styled Napa Valley Cabernet, one of my favorite examples is from Laird Family Winery.  As one of the largest land owners in Napa Valley, Laird has access to some terrific fruit sources.  The 2013 Napa Cab is built from almost equal parts Mast Ranch and Flat Rock vineyards.  The winery produces single vineyard Cabernets from both of these sites which retail for $80 to $90 per bottle…  It’s a brand that I love, and in fact we featured their 2012 vintage as one of our top 5 wines of the year in 2017.  At $53/btl the 2013 is simply stunning and a wine that shouldn’t be missed.

Laird has always attracted terrific winemakers.  The wines are currently made by Brian Mox, who spent several vintages at Lewis Cellars.  In 2013, Laird’s Consulting Winemaker was Paul Hobbs, one of the top winemakers in the world, having crafted such notables as Opus One, DuMOL, and Peter Michael to name a few.  This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Yountville spends an impressive 22 months in oak and generously delivers hedonistic delights with velvety tannins and great length.  The most common reaction to tasting this one is “Why haven’t I heard of these guys before?”  Consider yourself in-the-know!

From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, “Laird’s 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is a strong effort, with deep blueberry and blackberry fruit, charcoal and licorice, a touch of spicy oak and moderate tannin. This should be a wine to drink in its first 3-4 years, but certainly has the stuffing and structure to last 15 more years.”

SONOMA COAST

Small Vines 2014 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

We’ve been conditioned to believe that bigger is better… but sometimes smaller is pretty darn good. Small Vines defines what a true Artisan producer is, and crafts wines of brilliant clarity, stunning depth and perfect balance.  They’re not just small in production, but their organically farmed vineyards yield just 1 to 2 pounds of fruit per vine naturally, due to the petite vines and tight spacing.  Then again, big can be good too, like the flavors which are broad and expansive, and of course, the high score.  At $55/btl this wine competes with the best California Pinots on the market.
Emerging from four sensational vineyard sites including TBH, Fassler, Baranoff and MK, the winery also produces single vineyard Pinots which retail for around $70-$80/btl.  Once harvested, the berries pass through roughly a dozen rigorous hand-evaluations, selecting only the very best grapes.  If you’re searching for a stunningly complex, classic Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, you’ll want a case of this beauty.

2014 Humanitas Signum Proprietary Red
After tasting over 5,000 wines last year, my #1 pick was more obvious than it had been in any other year…  It was simply impossible to keep Humanitas Signum on the shelf.  It’s a wine that everybody absolutely loves, and within a few hours of releasing our number one pick, the entire vintage was history.  Our tasting panel was eagerly awaiting the release of the 2014, and after trying it this week, we bought every bottle we could get our hands on.  We’ve been tasting this 2014 vintage for the last couple of months and the evolution has been amazing and it tells us that it’s going to be an absolute Blockbuster… Of course it’s so good, I would recommend a case now and a case to lay down in the cellar.  At $100/btl retail this wine has it all…  At $54.99/btl, you might want to stop reading and get all you can.  You’ll need code signum55 to unlock this price on our site.
Wonderfully intense, compelling and rich, this wine has everything I desire in a big Cab blend…  the 2014 Signum is laden with sensual dark fruits, melted black chocolate, dried violets, tobacco leaf and cassis.  When we introduced the previous vintages, I asked when was the last time you enjoyed a bottle of wine and honestly thought you underpaid for it? I predict you will feel just that way when you try the new 2014 Signum Proprietary Red.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

2014 Husic Palm Terrace Cabernet Sauvignon
When you’ve had a successful career in investing like Frank Husic, you learn a thing or two about what’s needed for a company to give you a return on investment.  Calling on many of the same skills that made him a top financial planner, Frank gathered all the essentials to create a successful wine.  Beginning with the vineyard, located on the hillsides just above Napa Valley’s Iconic Stags leap District and planted to cult clones 337 and 7.  He then hired Jim Barbour as his viticulturist.  Jim’s list of clients include icons like Hundred Acre, Grace Family and Barbour to list a few… The next key component was hiring Mike Hirby as winemaker.  Mike’s past and present clients include Behrens Family, D.R. Stephens, Relic and Realm.  I’ll give you some insider’s advice… add some of this to your portfolio.
With everything in just the right place, Husic’s Palm Terrace rallies your taste buds into a bull market of dense blackberries, red currants, cassis and melted chocolate.  At under $100 a share, I mean a bottle, this is a wine that I can get behind and this beauty can be thoroughly enjoyed now and promises to pay dividends over the next 12-15 years.

Winery Notes: “2014 brought warm temperatures and moderate yields to our estate hillside vineyards in and above Stags Leap District, and the south-western exposure meant we were able to capture the warmth of the last rays of sun all season. The result is the most thoroughly ripe Palm Terrace we have made to date, comprised of clone 337 from Julie’s Knoll and Clone 7 from the Terraces. Aromas of damson plum, raspberry coulis, currants, sage, and cocoa are extremely inviting, while the palate unfolds in many layers of soft, lush fruit carrying rich, concentrated flavors. Drinkable now, and for many years to come.”

Quillia 2013 Proprietary Red Columbia Valley

QUILLIA

2013 PROPRIETARY RED
COLUMBIA VALLEY

In wine, some of the best opportunities arise when luxury brands have excess barrels of premium juice.  Quillia was born from a collection of some of the most prestigious vineyards in Washington State, and was created using the same tools and techniques as the marquee wines. Each component was carefully blended into a wine that performs many levels above it’s price, and like other wines in this category, Quillia is contractually obligated to silence on the specific origins of each component.  Of course, one taste will tell you all that you need to know, and at $25/btl this could take your house red to levels previously unknown…
Emerging from Washington’s coveted Columbia Valley AVA, an area made famous by Chateau Saint Michelle, Quilceda Creek and other iconic Washington State wineries.  Interestingly, Columbia Valley is almost directly on the same latitude as Bordeaux and the area clearly produces world-class Cabernet based wines.  The 2013 is a riveting blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, enhanced with Merlot, Cab Franc, Syrah, Mourvedre and Petite Verdot and the wine is deep, persistent and compelling to levels that are rarely found at this price.  I highly recommend a case, or two…

SILVER GHOST CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2015 NAPA VALLEY
In the wine business, the saying that nice guys finish last doesn’t hold an ounce of truth.  Anybody that’s met Weston Eidson, founder and winemaker at Silver Ghost will likely tell you that he’s absolutely one of the nicest guys in the wine industry, and I concur.  Silver Ghost always finishes first, and it’s also the first bottle finished when opened next to comparably priced wines.  When you’re as nice as Weston you can access to some seriously high quality fruit at a price low enough to produce a killer Napa Valley Cabernet at under forty per bottle. The 2015 comes from vineyards in Rutherford, Saint Helena and Yountville, where the diversity in each iconic site adds it’s own unique character and complexity to the final blend, which is stunningly good.
The 2015 is becoming known for its superior quality, and this Silver Ghost is brimming with crushed black fruits, chocolate covered blueberries, dried violets and espresso roast.  It’s kept for 22 months in French oak barrels, and if  you’ve tasted Weston’s earlier vintages of Silver Ghost, then you already know… If you haven’t, I strongly recommend grabbing some before it vaporizes.

Eponymous 2014 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

CABERNET SAUVIGNON
2014 NAPA VALLEY

What can you get from just a single word? Single word descriptors can mean quite a bit, particularly when describing wine. Bob Pepi’s 2014 Eponymous Cabernet Sauvignon offers a virtual wine dictionary of descriptors, with layers of flavors that lure you into craving more and more. With an eccentric perfume laced with black tea, eucalyptus, roasted coffee beans, sage and cocoa powder dusted blackberries, the 2014 is rich and scrumptious, and unsurprisingly, this wine has a following of it’s own.  At the normal $60/btl retail price, this wine would have you and you beaming with joy.

Calling on fruit from Mount Veeder and the Benchlands below Atlas Peak, this perfectly orchestrated composition of two distinctly different sites oozes complexity and defined flavors.  Aged in French oak barrels for 20 months, the 2014 opens up to an abundance of dark berries laced with holiday spices, dried mint, pipe tobacco and clove.  If you like things a little bit different and enjoy deep, complex and individualistic reds that have plenty of character… this one is for you.

Winery Notes: “Eponymous 2014 exudes lovely, complex notes as soon as the cork is pulled. Held to the light, this elegant wine shimmers with a stunning deep purple-inky color that announces the intensity of the grapes. The complexity of aromas jump out of the glass with rich blackberries, spice, vanilla and hints of toasted rosemary that carry over to the palate. This palate has classic Napa structure and grip with more than ample tannins, although nicely balanced by fruit, a rich earthiness and spice. It is rich, full and round from the initial taste, continuing as it fills the mouth, leading to a long, lingering, polished finish. ”
