2014 Humanitas Signum Proprietary Red
After tasting over 5,000 wines last year, my #1 pick was more obvious than it had been in any other year…  It was simply impossible to keep Humanitas Signum on the shelf.  It’s a wine that everybody absolutely loves, and within a few hours of releasing our number one pick, the entire vintage was history.  Our tasting panel was eagerly awaiting the release of the 2014, and after trying it this week, we bought every bottle we could get our hands on.  We’ve been tasting this 2014 vintage for the last couple of months and the evolution has been amazing and it tells us that it’s going to be an absolute Blockbuster… Of course it’s so good, I would recommend a case now and a case to lay down in the cellar.  At $100/btl retail this wine has it all…  At $54.99/btl, you might want to stop reading and get all you can.  You’ll need code signum55 to unlock this price on our site.
Wonderfully intense, compelling and rich, this wine has everything I desire in a big Cab blend…  the 2014 Signum is laden with sensual dark fruits, melted black chocolate, dried violets, tobacco leaf and cassis.  When we introduced the previous vintages, I asked when was the last time you enjoyed a bottle of wine and honestly thought you underpaid for it? I predict you will feel just that way when you try the new 2014 Signum Proprietary Red.

Tasting Notes: “An absolute blockbuster that is densely focused and opulent, yet without being heavy or cloying. Exceptionally concentrated with fresh crushed blackberries, perfectly ripened bing cherry and hints of elegant sweet vanilla. The supple, dusty fruit tannins are perfectly integrated with the hedonistic, otherworldly dark fruits, white flowers, freshly turned earth, tobacco leaf and subtle spice. This is a sensationally inky, full-bodied wine that drinks spectacularly now, but will continue to get better for many years.”

2014 PALM TERRACE
CABERNET SAUVIGNON

2014 Husic Palm Terrace Cabernet Sauvignon
When you’ve had a successful career in investing like Frank Husic, you learn a thing or two about what’s needed for a company to give you a return on investment.  Calling on many of the same skills that made him a top financial planner, Frank gathered all the essentials to create a successful wine.  Beginning with the vineyard, located on the hillsides just above Napa Valley’s Iconic Stags leap District and planted to cult clones 337 and 7.  He then hired Jim Barbour as his viticulturist.  Jim’s list of clients include icons like Hundred Acre, Grace Family and Barbour to list a few… The next key component was hiring Mike Hirby as winemaker.  Mike’s past and present clients include Behrens Family, D.R. Stephens, Relic and Realm.  I’ll give you some insider’s advice… add some of this to your portfolio.
With everything in just the right place, Husic’s Palm Terrace rallies your taste buds into a bull market of dense blackberries, red currants, cassis and melted chocolate.  At under $100 a share, I mean a bottle, this is a wine that I can get behind and this beauty can be thoroughly enjoyed now and promises to pay dividends over the next 12-15 years.

Winery Notes: “2014 brought warm temperatures and moderate yields to our estate hillside vineyards in and above Stags Leap District, and the south-western exposure meant we were able to capture the warmth of the last rays of sun all season. The result is the most thoroughly ripe Palm Terrace we have made to date, comprised of clone 337 from Julie’s Knoll and Clone 7 from the Terraces. Aromas of damson plum, raspberry coulis, currants, sage, and cocoa are extremely inviting, while the palate unfolds in many layers of soft, lush fruit carrying rich, concentrated flavors. Drinkable now, and for many years to come.”

LEEUWIN

2015 PRELUDE CHARDONNAY
MARGARET RIVER, AUSTRALIA

3026 Leeuwin Estate Prelude Chardonnay
As one of the most iconic Chardonnays from the entire Southern Hemisphere, Leeuwin has built a reputation for a style that perfectly reflects the new and old world.  With Burgundian complexity and keen acidity, marrying perfectly with new world weight and power, Leeuwin is no stranger to high scores…  Even their value-priced Prelude Chardonnay has already earned nearly a half dozen 92-95 point ratings, and at around half the price of the winery’s upper-end Artist Series, it’s an unbeatable value.
Created from 100% Estate fruit grown inside Australia’s famed Margaret River district, the 2015 Prelude was crafted under the guidance of two generations of winemakers. Spending just 9 months in French oak, the 2015 is wonderfully bright and lively across the palate, and beautiful expressions of ripe melon, honey dipped peach, Bosc pear and roasted hazelnut.  Leeuwin’s Prelude Chardonnay is made in a style that should appeal to just about anyone with a pulse…

“If you didn’t know about its Art Series sibling, you would be perfectly happy to accept this as a high class part of the Leeuwin Estate portfolio (which in a sense it is). A beautifully balanced wine, in terms both of its suite of stone fruit, citrus and pear flavors, and of the subtle barrel-ferment oak inputs. Its length is no less impressive.”

95 Points
From one of Margaret River’s leading Chardonnay producers, the 2015 Prelude doesn’t disappoint. It’s a nutty, smokey, toasty, melony beauty. Perfectly in balance, with a chalky texture and medium to light body, it wears its heart on its sleeve and is drinking perfectly now, but will gain more even more complexity with a few years in bottle. Drink now-2022.”

Quillia 2013 Proprietary Red Columbia Valley

QUILLIA

2013 PROPRIETARY RED
COLUMBIA VALLEY

In wine, some of the best opportunities arise when luxury brands have excess barrels of premium juice.  Quillia was born from a collection of some of the most prestigious vineyards in Washington State, and was created using the same tools and techniques as the marquee wines. Each component was carefully blended into a wine that performs many levels above it’s price, and like other wines in this category, Quillia is contractually obligated to silence on the specific origins of each component.  Of course, one taste will tell you all that you need to know, and at $25/btl this could take your house red to levels previously unknown…
Emerging from Washington’s coveted Columbia Valley AVA, an area made famous by Chateau Saint Michelle, Quilceda Creek and other iconic Washington State wineries.  Interestingly, Columbia Valley is almost directly on the same latitude as Bordeaux and the area clearly produces world-class Cabernet based wines.  The 2013 is a riveting blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, enhanced with Merlot, Cab Franc, Syrah, Mourvedre and Petite Verdot and the wine is deep, persistent and compelling to levels that are rarely found at this price.  I highly recommend a case, or two…

SILVER GHOST CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2015 NAPA VALLEY
In the wine business, the saying that nice guys finish last doesn’t hold an ounce of truth.  Anybody that’s met Weston Eidson, founder and winemaker at Silver Ghost will likely tell you that he’s absolutely one of the nicest guys in the wine industry, and I concur.  Silver Ghost always finishes first, and it’s also the first bottle finished when opened next to comparably priced wines.  When you’re as nice as Weston you can access to some seriously high quality fruit at a price low enough to produce a killer Napa Valley Cabernet at under forty per bottle. The 2015 comes from vineyards in Rutherford, Saint Helena and Yountville, where the diversity in each iconic site adds it’s own unique character and complexity to the final blend, which is stunningly good.
The 2015 is becoming known for its superior quality, and this Silver Ghost is brimming with crushed black fruits, chocolate covered blueberries, dried violets and espresso roast.  It’s kept for 22 months in French oak barrels, and if  you’ve tasted Weston’s earlier vintages of Silver Ghost, then you already know… If you haven’t, I strongly recommend grabbing some before it vaporizes.

Tamber Bey 2014 Rabicano
I always focus on the location when describing a new wine, because the origin of the grapes can be the single most important factor giving it a chance at greatness.  Tamber Bey’s Deux Chevaux Vineyard in Yountville is in a prime location and lies just across the Napa River from the 100 Point producing Kapcsandy Estate Vineyards, and with the iconic Ghost Block Vineyard just a stone’s throw away, this vineyard is definitely in the right neighborhood.  This fruit was then given a voice by winemaker Andy Jones, who began working alongside winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown in 2008 at Black Sears Winery, and Brown continues as the consulting winemaker at Tamber Bey.

A stunning display of class and depth, the 2014 Rabicano is built around a core of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and incorporates all five Bordeaux Varietals.  Kept for 18 months in French oak barrels, the 2014 possesses a velvety richness  swelling with sweet blackberries, plum, white chocolate, espresso and toffee notes.  If you tasted this wine blind you’d think you’re tasting a $100 Yountville Cab…

Eponymous 2014 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

EPONYMOUS

CABERNET SAUVIGNON
2014 NAPA VALLEY

What can you get from just a single word? Single word descriptors can mean quite a bit, particularly when describing wine. Bob Pepi’s 2014 Eponymous Cabernet Sauvignon offers a virtual wine dictionary of descriptors, with layers of flavors that lure you into craving more and more. With an eccentric perfume laced with black tea, eucalyptus, roasted coffee beans, sage and cocoa powder dusted blackberries, the 2014 is rich and scrumptious, and unsurprisingly, this wine has a following of it’s own.  At the normal $60/btl retail price, this wine would have you and you beaming with joy.

Calling on fruit from Mount Veeder and the Benchlands below Atlas Peak, this perfectly orchestrated composition of two distinctly different sites oozes complexity and defined flavors.  Aged in French oak barrels for 20 months, the 2014 opens up to an abundance of dark berries laced with holiday spices, dried mint, pipe tobacco and clove.  If you like things a little bit different and enjoy deep, complex and individualistic reds that have plenty of character… this one is for you.

Winery Notes: “Eponymous 2014 exudes lovely, complex notes as soon as the cork is pulled. Held to the light, this elegant wine shimmers with a stunning deep purple-inky color that announces the intensity of the grapes. The complexity of aromas jump out of the glass with rich blackberries, spice, vanilla and hints of toasted rosemary that carry over to the palate. This palate has classic Napa structure and grip with more than ample tannins, although nicely balanced by fruit, a rich earthiness and spice. It is rich, full and round from the initial taste, continuing as it fills the mouth, leading to a long, lingering, polished finish. ”

SALCHETO

2012 RISERVA
VINO NOBILE di MONTELPULCIANO
(SANGIOVESE BLEND)

Odds are, when three top wine critics in the US positively agree on a wine, it will appeal to aSalcheto Riserva broad audience. Yes, taste is  subjective, but truly great wine can transcend subjectivity and appeal to a much wider range of palates, simply because it’s an excellent representation, is perfectly balanced and has a set of indescribable qualities that is compelling for just about any wine lover. With triple 92-93 point scores and a price that’s fairly easy to swallow (pun, intended), I strongly recommend trying this one.

Emerging from Tuscany’s Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, this stunning Riserva spends the required 2 full years in oak and a year in the bottle before release.  With Sangiovese making up 90% of the final blend, the 2012 has a scrumptious bouquet lined with dark berries and wild plum, then on the palate the wine is deep, seductive and velvety.  With about 30 cases available, we don’t expect this wine to last very long…

We’re not the only ones Crazy about Katherine Goldschmidts Crazy Creek Vineyard Cabernet… The wine just earned an incredible 94 Point score in the January issue of Tasting Panel Magazine and at $19.99/btl, there’s simply nothing like it.  Saturating your palate in an abundance of chocolate covered cherries, crushed blackberries, roasted coffee and black currants, and just like the previous two vintages, this beauty out-performs most Cabernets double its price… Emerging from a single vineyard which for years went to Simi for their Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($75)…  At just $19.99/btl, Katherine Goldschmidt’s Crazy Creek Cabernet Sauvignon perfectly expresses just how inspiring Cabernet Sauvignon can be from Alexander Valley.
Ramping everything up a notch or two in terms of sheer power and concentration, the new vintage of Crazy Creek releases a dense core and remarkable palate presence, unlike anything I’ve tasted at this price.  2015 was a textbook vintage in Alexander Valley, resulting in low yields which provided high levels of intensity and vividly sensuous, opulent flavors.  I’m not surprised that this value driven Cabernet continues to be my top-selling Cabernet…
