ROEDERER ESTATE 2012 Roederer Estate L'Ermitage Anderson Valley Brut Sparkling Wine

2012 L’ERMITAGE
BRUT SPARKLING WINE

Did you know that Roederer Estate in Anderson Valley is the sister winery of Louis Roederer in France?  In France, their top Champagne is Cristal, but in California their flagship Sparkling wine is their L’Ermitage, which they only make in exceptional vintages.  Their winemaking style helping guide their success is based upon two very important elements; complete ownership of their vineyards with meticulous farming, along with oak-aging their Reserve wines.  L’Ermitage spends and impressive 5 years in oak casks, which lends to their style of body, finesse and depth of flavor.   With 95 and 97 Point scores from two of the Country’s top critics, this is a truly stunning vintage of L’Ermitage.

Louis Roederer is one of the most iconic names in Champagne with more than 200 years of traditional winemaking.  In the early 1980’s they discovered that the Anderson Valley, just North of Sonoma, was ideally suited for grapes used to make sparkling wines.  The area has a cooler climate with well-drained soils, and the close proximity to the Pacific Ocean provides a gentle cycle of warm days and cool nights, allowing the grapes to slowly mature and develop full flavors.  At under $50, this is simply one of the greatest sparkling wines produced in the New World.

Extravagant, yet balanced and refined, with lush, crisp brioche, fresh ginger and spice, roasted hazelnut and Asian pear flavors that fan out on the lengthy finish. Drink now through 2020.”  95 Points
Luxurious and layered, this nicely mature wine has a broad range of complex aromas and flavors, from fig to mushroom to butter and baking spices that ride a supple texture and linger for a long finish. The very fine bead, plush texture and a creamy richness that verges on sweetness are practically irresistible. Best through 2025.”  97 Points, Cellar Selection

CABERNET SAUVIGNON
2012 COOMBSVILLE

When we wrote about J Gregory’s Extol Red Blend in July, the wine sold out in a matter of hours, and nearly simultaneous to the delivery notices came an overabundance of re-order requests and glowing feedback.  Anybody that tasted the Extol, knows this winery is the real deal, and here’s a chance to try their 100% Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon from the epic 2012 vintage.  With around 5 years inside the bottle, this wine is indescribably stunning right now and it’s perfectly balanced and poised to go another decade. The bouquet alone merits the $95 retail price, and on the palate, the brilliantly detailed and absolutely classic Coombsville cocoa dusted black berries and graphite light up your senses.  Once you taste it, you’ll feel like you stole it.

Making an entrance from one of Napa Valley’s most prized vintages, this wine was expertly crafted by Mark Jessup who was on the original winemaking team at OPUS ONE from 1979 through 1987.  The Napa Valley earthquake destroyed around half of the 600 cases that were originally produced.  Lucky for us, some of the inventory has been safely tucked away at the winery for all of these years and as soon as we tasted it, we grabbed every bottle available.  If you love Cabernet, I highly recommend going BIG on this one…

Tasting Notes: “I love the way this wine sneaks up on you.  On the nose, intriguing aromas of dried blueberries, lavender, pencil lead and wet stone tease you. On my first taste, dried currants, earthy minerals, dried herbs and a hint of sweet vanilla prevail.  After some time in the glass, this one puts on weight, with concentrated cherry and dried cranberry., The excitement in the glass builds as it puts on weight in the glass, with a crescendo that peaks after well over an hour in the glass, leaving a long, penetrating finish.  This perfectly ready to drink beauty is great now, but has the structure to age for a decade or more. What a delight to drink. 94 Points

TRAILSIDE VINEYARD
2012 CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Heitz is an absolutely historic winery that continues to craft wine in the same traditional and age-worthy style that they’ve become revered for, for almost 60 years.  Each decision made at the winery, from when to pick, through the entire fermentation and aging process are purposefully made to guide the wine into a style that will stand the test of time, rather than be flashy and forward when consumed young.  Why? You’ll find the answer in a bottle of 2012 Heitz Trailside Vineyard Cabernet… After resting for 3 long years in 100% oak, followed by another 3 years inside the bottle, the 2012 now awakes with penetrating dark fruits, powerful structure, unending depth and remarkable detail.  With the new 2013 vintage checking in at $125/btl, the 2012 is a stunning value, that shouldn’t be missed at $79.99/btl.

The Trailside Vineyard, located in the Iconic Rutherford AVA, made it’s debut in 1989 and they’ve produced a bevy of high-scoring Cabernets from this vineyard ever since.  The wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and made it’s entrance from one of Napa Valley’s most desired vintages. I highly recommend saddling up and securing your case…

Subtle aromas of plums and cherries with hazelnuts and cedar follow through to a full body. Plenty of wood showing in the mid-palate with a flavorful finish. Needs two or three years to come together. A traditionally structured Napa cab with focus. Drink in 2021 and onwards.”  93 Points
Features an alluring mulled spice hint weaving around a core of gently steeped plum, blackberry and red currant fruit flavors. A light cherry wood note lines the finish while the fruit easily keeps pace. This is approachable now but there’s no rush.”  93 Points
From a certified organic vineyard in Rutherford, this is a 100% varietal wine that impresses from start to finish, allowing room for a slight whiff of reduction and tar on the nose. Dark notions of coffee are interwoven between bright layers of cassis and red cherry around structured acidity and oak.”

What do you get when you combine one of Napa’s most talented winemakers, whose day job is crafting the high-scoring TOR wines, with ancient Mourvedre from Bedrock, Syrah from Hudson and nearly century old Grenache vines from Sceales Vineyard?  The net result is a wine so outrageously good, that at thirty bucks it’s not even fair…  Of course, I wouldn’t expect anything less from Jeff Ames, who mentored under Thomas River Brown at Schrader, Maybach, Outpost and TOR before becoming head winemaker at TOR in 2005.  At TOR he’s made crafting high-90’s rated wines look easy, and with his own label Rudius, he’s applied that same skill-set to creating value wines with unrestrained character and profound hedonism.  Words can’t express how brilliant this wine is showing right now, but maybe actions can?  We bought every single bottle available just after we tasted it.

How do you take a wine like this and make it even better?  You allow it to blossom for 5 years in the bottle… The Fion Bainise blend is build around a core of 57% ancient vine Grenache and enhanced with 130 year old Mourvedre vines from Morgan Twain Peterson’s Iconic Bedrock Vineyard. It’s then amplified with 7% Syrah from Hudson Vineyard.  A wine this great, likely won’t last the day…

Winery Notes:Jeff always allows this wine to take on a life of its own, letting the brilliance of the vintage guide his blend, and in 2012 the Grenache is the shining star. Head-trained, 84 year- old Grenache gives the wine a deep ruby color and commands your attention from the first whiff with spicy aromas, sweetened by lush raspberry and subtle lavender undertones. On the palate, the Grenache dominates the entry with bright acidity and tannins that demand a little time in the cellar (or at least 30 minutes to breath once you pop the cork). The minerality of the 126 year-old Mourvédre wows you in the end, filling out the finish with flavors of silky ripe elderberry. And as the 2012 vintage would dictate, this is a bigger wine than previous incarnations, but fans of this bottling will recognize the bright acidity and appreciate its incredible ability to go with almost any food.

When I tasted Muga’s 2012 Selección Especial, the first three adjectives that came to mind were appealing, engaging and irresistible.  It’s been quite a while since I’ve tasted a Rioja that I love this much.  It immediately dazzles your palate with seductive black fruits, intriguing complexity, and focused, penetrating flavors that simply make you want to keep sipping.  Muga is one of Rioja’s most idolized producers and they have the scores to back it up.  At under forty per bottle the 2012 Selección Especial has already earned a monster 95 point score, and I wouldn’t hesitate to secure yours.

Muga’s Selección Especial comes from a high elevation vineyard located in the Rioja Alta region of Haro.  The blend is dominated by 70% Tempranillo, enhanced with other indigenous varietals.  The wine spends 26 months in oak and now with a few years in the bottle the 2012 is firing on all cylinders… Don’t miss it…

It’s symbolic to the quality of any wine that get’s requested and praised months or even years after our initial offering…  When this happens, some might call it storied or legendary, but when a value Cabernet Sauvignon makes this list, it simply speaks to the above-average quality of the wine.  Worthy’s Sophia’s Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon is cemented onto that list, and there’s really no surprise since it’s actually the second label for Axios, a top tier producer whose Cabernets range $135-$150 per bottle.  It was authored by legendary winemaker Bob Egelhoff, whose held winemaking positions at such notable wineries as Pahlmeyer, Harlan, Chappellet, Merryvale and David Arthur

I’m delighted but not surprised over how great many of the 2012 Napa Valley Cabernets from quality producers have developed in the bottle.  Worthy’s bouquet grabbed me from the very beginning with compelling and hedonistic notes that I found profoundly pleasing.   On the palate, soft and abundant layers of blackberry liqueur-like fruit, sweet mulberries, tobacco leaf, plum and dark chocolate charm your taste buds.  At under thirty per bottle this is clearly a terrific value in Napa Valley Cabernet.

Some of my favorite wine discoveries are those that naturally go on to sell hundreds of cases in just a couple vintages.  It’s a concrete affirmation proving that what we felt when we first tasted the wine resonated and was felt by almost everyone who tries it.  Sailor’s Grave’s Napa Valley Cabernet did just that.  And with its origins in Yountville, Oakville and Chiles Valley, combined with a price-point that makes you smile, it was the quality of the wine that propelled constant re-orders… to the tune of several hundred cases sold in only 2 vintages.

Originating from the Madrone Vineyard located at 1,900 feet in elevation, this deep, velvety red possesses a treasure chest of layers and remarkable balance.  Perpetually changing and evolving in the glass, layer after layer of impeccably well-balanced flavors coat your palate in an abundance of dark fruits and sweet, velvety tannins.  Aged for nearly two full years in barrels and now with around 3 1/2 years of development in the bottle, this wine is gorgeous right now and has the structure to go another decade.

2012 The Mascot Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Ever wonder what happens to the grapes from the younger vines of some of the top wine estates in Napa? The wine from these vineyards would simply be way too good to sell off, so in this case, they made an incredible marriage of wines from their three amazing brands. The Mascot is a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon born from distinct hillside vineyards; specifically from the comparatively younger vines of BOND, Harlan Estate, and Promontory. It started out as a small project in the 2008 vintage, championed by Will Harlan and shared among the family, winemaking team, and close friends. Drawing fruit from blocks of more recently replanted vineyards between 7-15 years of age, The Mascot has such deep and expansive flavors and is so compelling, it’ll make you question how you got a wine of this quality, for this price.  Grab some now before this Mascot disappears…
Although the winery doesn’t specify exact grape varietal percentages in each vintage, The Mascot is always 90 – 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot. This fantastic 2012 Cabernet perfectly reflects the breed and heritage of its incredible origins and will make you grin from ear to ear when you taste it.

Winery Notes: “The growing season of 2012 was defined by ideal conditions – warm, gentle, and even – and the resulting wine reflects this benevolence. The nose is wrapped around a core of red fruit and subtle spice. Upon entry, a spherical density expands into lush, vibrant warmth. Continuing easily across the palate, finely textured tannins resolve into a lengthy finish. The 2012 is generous and welcoming in its youth, and for the patient it promises deeper layers as the years pass.”

There’s something magical that happens when a powerful Howell Mountain Cabernet has a few extra years in the bottle…  As good as they can be at release, they really blossom into something even more incredible with a little extra age. The two challenges in enjoying one on a regular basis are the high cost, and patience to wait that long.  With the average cost of 2012 Howell Mountain Cabernet likely well over $100, you get the picture…  The 2012 Prim Howell Mountain Cabernet is a stunningly brilliant example that’s riveting, deeply focused, and underlines all of the qualities that make Howell Mountain wines so wonderous. On CellarTracker a consumer tasted this wine a year ago and wrote, “$80 retail and worth it.”  I couldn’t agree more, and it’s even better now…  Of course I recommend grabbing as much as you can, because this likely won’t last the day.
Crafted by Rudy Von Strasser who’s been making hits since the 1980’s.  He gained experience while interning at Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, then at Icons Trefethen and Newton.  Reigning from a vineyard perched at 1,700 feet, Prim’s 2012 Howell Mountain Cabernet has developed into a wine that I just can’t get enough of…

Sometimes it pays to get in early… Last September we were the first retailer in the US to taste Vik’s 2012 Milla Calla Blend, and we knew it was something special.  When it recently scored 94 Points by the Wine Spectator, I wasn’t the least bit surprised… It’s produced by one of the preeminent wineries in the Southern Hemisphere, and from an area that lies South of Santiago that was chosen after two years of intense scientific research and more than 4000 soil samples, in a relentless search for the best terroir in Chile.  The final blend checking in at 50% Cabernet Sauvignon accented with Carmenere, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah, saturating your palate in intense dark fruits, saddle leather, black chocolate and earthly spices….

Created by legendary winemaker Patrick Valette, who is responsible for crafting some of the greatest wines in Chile and Bordeaux, and Norwegian entrepreneur Alexander Vik.  With literally no expense spared on this project, the grapes were meticulously sorted in the most modern grape selection line in Chile before being transported by gravity, into individual fermentation tanks.  VIK’s top wine retails for $140/btl and we found that the Milla Cala at $40/btl drinks like a wine that should be many times its price point.
