I’ve always found a mystical element in Mount Veeder fruit that always draws me in.  It’s the largest AVA within Napa Valley but the rugged terrain limits production to just 1.3% of Napa Valley grapes.  Yielding small, powerful berries, the sandstone and shale soils set this Mountain apart from all others in Napa.  It’s also the coolest Mountain which allows the grapes to have a longer hang-time so they can develop into something majestic.  One of the area’s hallmarks is the fine-grained tannins, along with brambly Mountain berries, stony minerality, and exceptional concentration.  The only thing keeping us from enjoying Mount Veeder wine every day is their scarcity and the often high-elevation price tag.  Of the ten 2014 Mount Veeder Cabernets that I found listed in the Wine Spectator, the average price was well over $100/btl. Sometimes it pays to get in early… Last September we were the first retailer in the US to taste Vik’s 2012 Milla Calla Blend, and we knew it was something special.  When it recently scored 94 Points by the Wine Spectator, I wasn’t the least bit surprised… It’s produced by one of the preeminent wineries in the Southern Hemisphere, and from an area that lies South of Santiago that was chosen after two years of intense scientific research and more than 4000 soil samples, in a relentless search for the best terroir in Chile.  The final blend checking in at 50% Cabernet Sauvignon accented with Carmenere, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah, saturating your palate in intense dark fruits, saddle leather, black chocolate and earthly spices….
 
Created by legendary winemaker Patrick Valette, who is responsible for crafting some of the greatest wines in Chile and Bordeaux, and Norwegian entrepreneur Alexander Vik.  With literally no expense spared on this project, the grapes were meticulously sorted in the most modern grape selection line in Chile before being transported by gravity, into individual fermentation tanks.  VIK’s top wine retails for $140/btl and we found that the Milla Cala at $40/btl drinks like a wine that should be many times its price point.

Chappellet’s Iconic Pritchard Hill Vineyards have been hailed by some as “Napa’s Grand Cru,” and particularly with Bordeaux Varietals.  Following the advice of renowned winemaker André Tchelistcheff, by planting on the rocky high-elevation slopes, Chappellet became one of the first wineries in Napa Valley to plant vineyards on the lofty hillsides.  A half century later, their 2016 Mountain Cuvée still includes fruit from the winery’s coveted Estate Vineyard, and was expertly composed by renowned winemaker Phillip Titus, who’s been with Chappellet for nearly 30 years.  At $31.99/btl there’s simply never enough of this value wine from Chappellet to meet demand. 
 
An absolute crowd-pleaser, and those of you who’ve enjoyed this blend each vintage might notice the 2016 exploits a greater percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon than their previous 6 vintages.  With Cabernet as the dominant grape, the 2016 is nicely concentrated, and on the palate, the wine’s hallmark velvety embrace comes dressed with provocative black cherries, blueberries, dried violets and cocoa. When I first tasted Keever’s 2013 Inspirado (Inspired) for the first time, to say that I was inspired by the quality would be an incredible understatement.  A better name would have been Infatuated, because that’s exactly how I felt after trying this wine.  With a resonant finish that lasts longer than nearly any wine that I’ve ever tasted at this price point, and expansive flavors so deep and compelling, that they leave you thinking about the wine for days after tasting it, this is a wine that you simply shouldn’t miss…  It’s authored by Celia Welch, (Scarecrow, D.R. Stephens, Barbour, Dalla Valle…)  And just in case you may not be familiar with Celia’s artistry, a testament to Celia’s winemaking ability is the fact that she made 5 cases of 2012 Scarecrow that sold for a record $260,000 at the Premiere Napa Valley Wine Auction… 
 
Checking in at 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, inspired by additions of Merlot and Malbec, the 2013 Inspirado saturates your taste buds in otherworldly levels of opulence. And while there are a lot of great Napa Valley Cabernet based wines available at under $100/btl, few approach this level of quality.  I have a strong suspicion that the critic’s will feel the same, and I simply wouldn’t wait for the scores to come out…  It will be too late…

In wine, some of the best opportunities arise when luxury brands have excess barrels of premium juice.  Quillia was born from a collection of some of the most prestigious vineyards in Washington State, and was created using the same tools and techniques as the marquee wines. Each component was carefully blended into a wine that performs many levels above it’s price, and like other wines in this category, Quillia is contractually obligated to silence on the specific origins of each component.  Of course, one taste will tell you all that you need to know, and at $25/btl this could take your house red to levels previously unknown… 
Emerging from Washington’s coveted Columbia Valley AVA, an area made famous by Chateau Saint Michelle, Quilceda Creek and other iconic Washington State wineries.  Interestingly, Columbia Valley is almost directly on the same latitude as Bordeaux and the area clearly produces world-class Cabernet based wines.  The 2013 is a riveting blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, enhanced with Merlot, Cab Franc, Syrah, Mourvedre and Petite Verdot and the wine is deep, persistent and compelling to levels that are rarely found at this price.  I highly recommend a case, or two…
