MOON MOUNTAIN DISTRICT
If you enjoy robust, hedonistic Cabs from Mount Veeder, and the elegant and savory wines from Spring Mountain, you would also enjoy wines from Moon Mountain. Positioned on the Sonoma side of Mount Veeder, the well-drained red volcanic soils are also home to icons like the Monte Rosso, which was made famous by Louis Martini, and Frederick’s Vineyard used by Turley. At the $38 retail price, Ty Caton’s Winemaker’s Cuvée from Moon Mountain earned a Gold Medal at the SF Chronicle Wine Competition. But at our price, few others can compete.

2015 Heitz Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
HEITZ
CABERNET SAUVIGNON
2015 NAPA VALLEY
Heitz is one of Napa Valley’s most historic wineries, and it’s their undeviating style of producing profoundly hedonistic and age-worthy Cabernets that have become a hallmark of their brand. The winery has reliably produced their unmistakably intense, savory, well-built Cabernets since the 1960s. Their 2015 Napa Cabernet perfectly expresses their timeless approach, and with a 95 Point Score and Editors’ Choice, I recommend going all-in…
2016 Shottesbrooke “Langhorne Creek” Cabernet Sauvignon
SHOTTESBROOKE
2016 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
LANGHORNE CREEK, AUSTRALIA
Some of the most complex and hedonistic Cabernet Sauvignon for your dollar, comes from down-under. The grape has a long history in Australia that dates back to the mid-1800s. Luminaries Penfolds, Leeuwin and Cape Mentelle have helped to canonize Australian grown Cabernet as a serious contender on the world stage. Shottesbrooke’s 2016 Cabernet reminded me of this, and with 93 and 95 Point scores, I wouldn’t hesitate to secure yours.
Hailing from the Langhorne Creek Appellation, which is located inside the Fleurieu zone, and is also home to the McLaren Vale region, Shottesbrooke’s 2016 perfectly expresses the area’s rich terroir.
The 2016 is loaded with classically styled, profound notes of eucalyptus, blue plums, juniper berry, and baking spices. The wine is intensely aromatic, wildly complex, approachable, and at our price, offers extraordinary value.

2016 Paradigm Oakville Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
PARADIGM
CABERNET SAUVIGNON
2016 OAKVILLE ESTATE
If I were to choose one wine that perfectly articulates Oakville’s notorious complexity, Paradigm Cabernet would be my first choice. Their Estate is positioned directly South of Andy Beckstoffer’s Iconic To-Kalon Vineyard, and in an area widely considered the epicenter of Grand Cru quality Cabernet. The winery’s neighbors include icons, Dominus, Harlan, Opus One, and Martha’s Vineyard, and at this price, Paradigm tips the scales with groundbreaking quality.
This absolutely stunning Cabernet was made by Heidi Barrett whose past and present clients includes Amuse Bouche, Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle, Grace Family, Revana, David Arthur and Barbour…
Heidi made the 2016 vintage in a focused, beautifully knit style that’s concentrated and highly detailed. The wine spends 20 months in oak and 20 months in the bottle before release and offers a parade of focused red and black fruits, minerals, and vanilla bean.

“Dark Cabernet color with beautiful aromas of black cherry, cassis, plums, 5-spice, vanilla. Big, ripe and mouthcoating across the palate. The flavors are similar to the aromas with ripe fruit, berry/cherry pie, moderate tannins, and nice length. This wine shows enough structure to be age-worthy yet soft and balanced enough to enjoy upon release. Flavors linger in this tasty dense wine. Tastes like Oakville.”
2016 Double Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven Hills Washington State
DOUBLE CANYON
CABERNET SAUVIGNON
HORSE HEAVEN HILLS
2016 WASHINGTON STATE
California isn’t the only state on the West Coast capable of producing World-Class Cabernet Sauvignon. There’s an Appellation inside the Columbia Valley called Horse Heaven Hills that’s home to iconic vineyards like Champoux in Alderdale, which Quilceda Creek fans might recognize. They’ve produced five perfect 100 point Cabernets from it. Double Canyon sources from four sites within the Alderdale region, and at $23, you’ve really got to try it.
The Horse Heaven Hills Appellation is defined by it’s proximity to the Columbia River, strong winds, and volcanic soils, which produce a distinct mineral nuance. The area even caught the eye of Andre Tchelistcheff, legendary winemaker at Beaulieu Vineyards.
The 2016 combines fruit from Phinny Hill, Destiny Ridge, Alder Ridge, and their own Double Canyon Estate Vineyard. The final blend beautifully expresses the 88% Cabernet Sauvignon heightened with Syrah, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Malbec, which all contribute to the rich textures and compelling flavors.

“… What impressed us about this wine beyond its value were its numerous layers of aromas and flavors. Roasted coffee, cedar, and blackberry are distinctive on the nose, and on the palate, tobacco, underbrush, and grainy tannins keep the mouth dry with chalky, teeth-gripping texture. It’s structured and clean, with a sweet, toasty finish.” 93 Points

BARREL SELECTION
CABERNET SAUVIGNON
2017 NAPA VALLEY
I love watching a brand that we’ve featured from their early days gain momentum, with high scores and well-deserved acclaim. Grand Napa Vineyards in Rutherford also produces the Calculated Risk and Heir Apparent brands, and top publications like James Suckling and Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate feature all three brands with high scores. With a mere 178 cases produced, the 2017 Calculated Risk Barrel Selection Cab impressed our panel, as well as James Suckling.
Owner Dwight Bonewell produces multiple brands, all under one umbrella, and that’s a good thing because Grand Napa has access to a selection of Napa Valley’s top vineyards. When creating the 2017 Calculated Risk Barrel Selection, his team selected fruit from Coombsville and St. Helena AVA’s to create a wine that’s powerful, penetrating, and balanced.
The 2017 Barrel Selection is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and it lights up your senses with cocoa dusted black fruits, graphite, and crushed flowers. The wine perfectly fuses the elegance and restrained power of Coombsville, with St. Helena structure and depth.

“Wild flowers and roses with a fresh, blackberry and blackcurrant edge to the nose, too. The palate has soft, ripe and almost creamy tannins on offer, in a soft, easy mode. Drink or hold.” 91 Points
